Several NIPSCO supervisors and crew members were in the Dyer and Hammond area Saturday trying to trace a strong odor of natural gas that blanketed the area.
NIPSCO spokeswoman Jill Kinder said a call came in about 11:55 a.m. reporting the odor. As of 3 p.m. Kinder said they still had not discovered the source of the odor and could not confirm there was a gas leak.
"We feel there is no cause for concern at this time," said Kinder.
Multiple municipalities also were trying to trace the source of an odor of natural gas reported in the Munster, Hammond, Dyer, East Chicago and Whiting areas.
Calls to Hammond, Munster, Dyer and Griffith municipalities indicate the odor was being reported there and emergency workers were checking, but nothing had been found.
