CEDAR LAKE — The town's new police chief will introduce himself and take questions during a Meet the Chief event Tuesday night.

Police Chief David Coulson took the helm at the Cedar Lake Police Department on Nov. 1, following the retirement of Police Chief Gerald "Jerry" Smith.

The Meet the Chief event is set to begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Town Hall, 7408 Constitution Ave.

Coulson said he settled in a bit before scheduling the event, but is interested in hearing from residents.

"I think it's important that the community hear from the Police Department," Coulson said. "I want to let them know that I'm there for them and their concerns, as well as ensure that we have transparency."

Coulson recently retired from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with more than 28 years of service, where he worked with local police on violent crime and gang cases. He spent the majority of his ATF career in the bureau's Merrillville office and his last 3.5 years in the Chicago office.

Coulson began his 37-year law enforcement career at the Indiana University Northwest Police Department and was first hired full-time by the Highland Police Department.
