DARE fundraiser planned for tonight

The Munster Police Department will be hosting a fundraising event for the Munster Police Department's Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program combined with a "Coffee with a Cop" event from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at McDonald's, 515 Ridge Road. Fifteen percent of the sales — dine-in and drive-thru — will be donated to the DARE Program. Police officers will be on-site to meet with participants, and participants can also view a police squad car and SWAT vehicle up close in the parking lot. Free fall concert tonight

The choirs of LaPorte High School will present their fall concert at 7 p.m. tonight and will feature all of the high school concert choirs along with eighth-grade choirs from both Boston and Kesling middle schools. The program will include a wide variety of music, from an Israeli folk song to music by Lin-Manuel Miranda from "Moana" and "Hamilton." The performance is presented free of charge in the high school auditorium.

Duneland Weavers' Guild meeting

The Duneland Weavers’ Guild will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Chesterton Art Center, 115 S. Fourth St. In addition to a lively Show 'n' Tell, there will be a program on three-shaft weaves that is part of a three-day workshop. The meetings are open to guests who are fiber artists of any kind or would like to be. As a bonus, attendees will be able to tour the gallery and view the workshop's progress.

Blessing of pets

CHESTERTON — Continuing a tradition of many years, St. Francis’ Episcopal Church will have a blessing of the pets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 237 E. Porter Ave. The event is open to all in the community who want to bring their pet to be blessed by the Rev. David Pearson and be presented with a St. Francis medallion. Fall festival

VALPARAISO — The First United Methodist Church is having a fall festival from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at 103 Franklin St. There will be a bounce house, obstacle course, pumpkin decorating, cookie decorating and lawn games. There will be vendors. In addition, there will be popcorn and cotton candy.

Meet the author

GARY — The public is invited to meet author Adra Young at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Woodson Branch, 501 S. Lake St., and at 2 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Kennedy Branch, 3953 Broadway. A native of Gary and a Roosevelt High School graduate, Young has more than 20 years of experience with youth in and out of the classroom environment.

Pet blessing

GRIFFITH — It will be raining cats, dogs, lizards, birds, turtles, frogs and bunny rabbits when St. Mary Church in Griffith hosts its 38th annual Feast of St. Francis Pet Blessing and Pet Supply Drive at noon Saturday at 525 N. Broad St. St. Mary Pastor, the Rev. Theodore Mens, will bless all pets with holy water and owners will receive a certificate, too. They will also collect items to be donated to Humane Indiana and the Griffith Animal Shelter. Purina Dry dog/puppy and cat/kitten food, unflavored dog biscuits, large absorbent cloth towels, laundry detergent, nonclumping cat litter and monetary gifts will all be accepted.
