Don't be alarmed if you notice the smell of natural gas in the air today or hear gas blowing in parts of Highland and Munster, officials said.

NIPSCO will conduct a controlled release of gas near Fisher Street and Calumet Avenue in Munster and near Grand Boulevard and Kennedy Avenue in Highland until 6 p.m.

After 6 p.m., NIPSCO will begin a higher-volume purge, according to a Nixle alert from Highland police.

Residents may notice an unpleasant odor in the air or hear gas blowing.
