HAMMOND | A 5-year-old North Hammond boy was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday night after being hit by a car, police said.

Witnesses said the boy ran between parked cars into the street in the 4400 block of Wabash Avenue about 5 p.m. and was struck by a passing vehicle.

He was airlifted to an Illinois trauma center with what emergency room physicians at a local hospital described as a serious head injury and a badly damaged knee.

The 17-year-old driver of the car was not cited, but police said Sunday night their investigation was ongoing. - By Steve Zabroski, The Times
