MERRILLVILLE | The law firm of Burke Costanza and Carberry received the Attorney General's Cup from Attorney General Greg Zoeller on Friday for its contributions in the fifth annual March Against Hunger food drive.
The firm, which has offices in Merrillville, Valparaiso and Chicago, won the large firm division of the competition among 44 participating law firms in Indiana and Kentucky by donating $7,153 and 1,675 pounds of food. The food was donated to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana.
"Too many Hoosiers, including children, face hunger on a daily basis, and it's heartwarming to see the members of my profession step up in such a big way," Zoeller said.
Altogether, the March Against Hunger collected $55,455 and 10,065 pounds of food for food banks statewide. Zoeller said the monetary and food donations combined were the equivalent of 143 tons of food. Zoeller worked with the Indiana State Bar Association and the nonprofit group Feeding Indiana's Hungry.
Emily Weikert Bryant, Feeding Indiana's Hungry executive director, said, "One in six Hoosiers is at risk of hunger, and for Hoosier children it's one in four. The pounds contributed through the food drive this year will provide the equivalent of nearly 240,000 meals to Hoosiers in need with nearly 1 million pounds donated since the program was created in 2009."
Bar association President Daniel Vinovich said, "It's opportunities like this annual food drive that allow us to serve beyond our clients."
