Relief from the snow and cold weather doesn't appear to be coming soon.
Northwest Indiana is projected to receive another 2 to 3 inches of snow starting early Friday, said Andrew Krein, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Romeoville, Ill.
"This won't be lake-effect snow, but a quick-moving weather system coming from the west," said Matt Friedlein, another meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
Krein said the snow could start as early as 4 a.m. and continue through 10 a.m.
Low temperatures also are expected to stick around Friday and Saturday, but Krein said the weather could be warming up early next week.
The additional snow expected locally comes after several region communities on Thursday received their first significant snowfall this winter.
LaPorte County logged 8 inches of snow, Porter County reported 6 inches and Lake County reported anywhere from a trace to 3 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.
Thursday's snow caused numerous accidents, including one crash that resulted in a man being airlifted to a South Bend hospital with life-threatening head injuries.
At 11:30 a.m., a 19-year-old Westville man was traveling too fast for conditions on westbound Interstate 94 near the Burns Harbor exit in the left lane when he lost control of his 2001 Pontiac Sunfire, according to Indiana State Police.
The Sunfire spun out in the middle lane in front of a semitrailer pulling a rail container. Police said the semi hit the passenger side of the Sunfire, causing the semi to jack-knife with the Pontiac still attached to its front end.
Both vehicles left the road, went through a fence, down a ditch and nearly exited onto an access road.
The Westville man was transported to Porter Regional Hospital and later airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital.
Indiana State Police also reported responding to numerous slide-off and spin-out accidents on the Borman Expressway, Interstate 65 and the Indiana Toll Road throughout Thursday morning.
LaPorte County and the Porter County Sheriff's Departments reported scattered accidents.
