CROWN POINT | Expanded weekend patrols targeting the urban core of Lake County resulted in 29 arrests, Lake County Sheriff John Buncich announced Monday.

Intensified patrols of by state, county and local police agencies targeted Gary, Hammond, East Chicago and Whiting, netting 29 arrests of which 15 individuals were wanted on outstanding warrants.

The arrests involved incidents of auto theft, drug offenses, drunken driving and possessing a handgun without a permit. One stolen vehicle was recovered after a brief pursuit, according to the sheriff's release.

Responding to the recent escalation in violent incidents, such efforts will be ongoing, Buncich stated in the announcement.
