CEDAR CREEK TOWNSHIP | Lake County police responding Thursday to a fire that leveled a home near Lake Dalecarlia discovered an injured man, who was airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center.
Police responding to the fire in the 4700 block of West 153rd Avenue about 12:30 p.m. Thursday found the house completely engulfed, according to a news release issued Friday by police spokeswoman Patti Van Til.
A local resident told police an explosion had been heard just before the start of the fire, the release stated.
Police are investigating the role of the injured man, who was not identified. His condition is currently unknown, according to the release.
Police identified the home's owner as Richard Stone, of Cedar Lake.
Police believe no one was living in the home at the time of the fire, which is considered a possible arson.
The fire remains under investigation, the release stated.
Five fire departments responded Thursday to the blaze at the northeast corner of 153rd Avenue and Colfax Street.
No one was living in the house, which was being renovated, the release stated. The house burned to the ground in less than an hour.
The fire was one of two reported within an hour of each other Thursday.
Three fire departments responded to a second blaze at 1:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Meadow Ridge in Schererville. There were no reported injuries in the blaze that heavily damaged the home's exterior.
