Blowing and drifting snow on some area roadways had motorists in some areas slipping and sliding through their morning commute.

According to Indiana State Police, Interstate 94 in Porter County was most impacted early Wednesday, with troopers responding to numerous slide-off and spin-out accidents.

By 9 a.m., Indiana State Police for the Lowell District and the Toll Road reported clear conditions on area expressways.

Portions of U.S. 30 near the Lake/Porter County line were down to one lane due to drifting snow. Some motorists had to resort to driving through in the ruts created by other drivers' tires.

Sheriffs police in Porter and LaPorte counties reported snow-covered roads and numerous slide-off and spin-out crashes at the start of the morning commute.

By 9 a.m., officers said the number of crashes was down significantly and most major roads were clear down to the pavement.

Road conditions forced the closure and delayed starts of many area schools. A full list is available at nwi.com/closings.
