SCHERERVILLE | It’s a Valentine’s Day tradition that’s 16 years in the making.
On Thursday, Albert’s Diamond Jewelers, 711 Main St., will again become a wedding chapel for more than 20 couples who will say their “I do’s” and receive a variety of special gifts.
Between noon and 3 p.m. couples who have registered for the nuptials will be joined in marriage by Lake County Juvenile Court Judge Mary Beth Bonaventura. Hammond City Judge Jeffrey Harkin will begin performing the ceremonies at 3.
“All the couples must have a valid Indiana marriage license,” said Sara Brown of Albert’s.
A variety of special gifts for the newlyweds are being donated by local vendors. Each couple will receive a cake from Ultra, flowers from Monarch Florists of Schereville and a sweet treat from Branya Bakery of St. John.
“Timeless Images will provide the photography,” Brown said.
Couples who get married at Albert’s on Thursday also will be registered in a special drawing for a three-day expense-paid honeymoon in Las Vegas.
The lucky couple will be whisked to O’Hare by Apollo Limousine for the flight to Vegas, where they will stay at City Center.
Among the special treats awaiting the honeymooners will be two one-day spa passes and two tickets for a performance by Cirque du Soleil.
The tradition, which began when Albert’s was in East Chicago, honors the wedding anniversary of Fred and Donna Halpern, parents of Albert’s owner Josh Halpern.
The couple, who celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary this Valentine’s Day, will be in Florida this year, Brown said.
