SCHERERVILLE | A longtime vacant property could be transformed into Schererville's first brewery.
The Plan Commission on Monday reviewed initial plans for Craft 41 Brewery, which would be at 821 U.S. 41.
In addition to brewing and distributing beer, there would be a tap room and restaurant at the facility, said developer Bruce Boyer, of Boyer Properties. A patio would be created for outdoor dining and tasting. Tours of the brewery also would be offered.
After construction of the brewery, there would be space for expansion and possible additional buildings, Boyer said.
He said breweries tend to attract other businesses.
The property is near the location of a future bike path, which would be an asset to the business, Boyer said.
He said the property has an existing access area on U.S. 41, so there wouldn't be a need to obtain a permit from the Indiana Department of Transportation to create a driveway.
Boyer said he has had preliminary conversations with neighboring property owners regarding connecting into their access to a nearby traffic signal.
Having that connection would make it easier and safer for motorists to access the brewery.
No decisions about the plans were made Monday because they were presented during a study session, but town officials appear interested in the proposed business.
Town Manager Bob Volkmann said Schererville will continue to analyze the proposal to determine how to proceed.
Boyer said engineering has just started for the project, and more study sessions might be needed to continue discussing the plans.
"We would like to be in operation by August," Boyer said of Craft 41 Brewery.
