SCHERERVILLE | A caucus has been set to select a person to fill the vacant 2nd Ward Town Council spot in Schererville.
The caucus is scheduled for 6 p.m. Dec. 12 at the St. John Township community center, 1515 W. U.S. 30, said Kevin Slaman, chairman of Schererville's Republican precinct organization.
The person selected would be sworn in that night, Slaman said.
That person wouldn't have to wait long to participate in a council meeting. The council meets at 7 that night.
Republicans living in Schererville's 2nd Ward can file for the seat up to 72 hours before the caucus, said Kim Krull, Lake County Republican chairwoman.
Republican Kevin Connelly is the only person who has filed so far for the vacant council spot, Slaman said.
Connelly served as a Schererville Police Commission member from 2008 to 2011, and he was the panel's chairman during three of those years, he said.
Last week, Connelly said his service and financial experience would be an asset if he becomes the next 2nd Ward councilman.
The 2nd Ward council spot became vacant last month after Republican Hal Slager left the position to represent Indiana House District 15.
Slager's term on the Town Council has two years remaining.
