SCHERERVILLE | A 19-year-old Schererville man is accused of robbing a group at gunpoint while they were using an ATM at a Schererville bank.
Joel Hill has been charged with armed robbery, attempted armed robbery and three counts of criminal confinement.
Police said a man approached a vehicle Oct. 18 at an ATM at the Chase Bank branch at 1801 Kennedy Ave. There were three people in the vehicle, police said.
The man allegedly pointed a handgun at the driver of the vehicle and stole $40 the driver just retrieved from the ATM.
Police said the man also told the driver to make another withdrawal using the bank card from one of the passengers.
When the bank card wouldn't work, the man ordered the group to leave, police said. After driving away, the group immediately reported the incident to police.
Through a picture lineup, the victims identified Hill as the person who robbed them, police said.
Hill has been in custody at the Lake County Jail after he was charged Oct. 25 in connection to a burglary that occurred July 19 in the 100 block of Seville Street in Schererville, police said.
