SCHERERVILLE | Republican Kevin Connelly has become the newest Schererville town councilman.
Schererville Republican precinct committeemen selected Connelly over Ken Stevenson to replace Hal Slager, who vacated the 2nd Ward Town Council seat to represent Indiana House District 15.
There are two years remaining on Slager's term.
Of the 29 votes cast Wednesday, 26 were for Connelly, said Kim Krull, Lake County Republican chairwoman.
"This is quite humbling," Connelly said after hearing the results.
Connelly was immediately sworn in to his new position by Slager.
"I'm so pleased for Kevin," Slager said.
Connelly said "it meant a lot" to have Slager complete the swearing in ceremony because Slager was the person who helped him get involved in the community. He also said Slager has been a mentor to him.
Connelly said he learned about town government during his experience on Schererville's Park Board and Police Commission.
He said he is looking forward to the opportunity to continue serving the town.
Connelly said redevelopment in Schererville is an area he plans to focus on while on the council.
He is pleased that plans for the proposed Shops on Main development have been revitalized, and said it's important to continue those efforts.
Connelly said public safety also is a top priority.
Although Stevenson wasn't selected to serve on the council, he said that won't discourage him from trying to become more involved in the community.
Stevenson hopes to have the opportunity to serve on one of the town's boards, he said.
"We've got to find something for you too," Slager said to Stevenson after the caucus results were announced.
