SCHERERVILLE | A caucus hasn't yet been set to fill the vacant 2nd Ward Town Council seat, but a former Police Commission member is interested in the position.
Republican Kevin Connelly on Monday said he wants to fulfill the remainder of Hal Slager's Town Council term, which has two years remaining.
Connelly said he served as a Schererville Police Commission member from 2008 to 2011. He said he was the panel's chairman during three of those years.
Connelly said his experience on the commission gave him an understanding of town government.
"It's something I really enjoyed," he said.
Connelly is an account manager at Ricoh in Chicago. He said he has developed service and financial experience, which would be an asset if he is selected to serve on the council.
Connelly said he hasn't yet had the opportunity to officially file to be considered for the Town Council position because a caucus hasn't been set to select a person to fill the vacant seat.
Connelly said he will file once the caucus is scheduled.
"I'm ready," he said.
Kevin Slaman, chairman of Schererville's Republican precinct organization, said the caucus could occur Dec. 10 or 11.
Slager, a Republican, represented Schererville's 2nd Ward, and only Republicans in that ward could file to be considered for the seat, Slaman said.
Slager's council seat became vacant after he officially took the Indiana House District 15 seat last week.
