SCHERERVILLE | Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey was the guest speaker for the American Association of University Women’s Spring Luncheon last month.
“As a professional woman, it is an honor to speak to this organization of women who are focused on identifying leadership opportunities in our community," Frey said.
Frey shared with her audience her mission to provide education for preventable infant deaths by providing safe sleeping patterns for babies.
“Sadly, for Lake County, of the 43 infants deaths occurring between 2011 to 2013, 42 percent were related to sleeping with a parents(s) and/or not in a crib or bassinette. These are preventable deaths.”
The American Association of University Women donated four Pack and Play sleeping cribs to the Child Fatality Review Team, on which Frey serves as a board member. The team reviews fatalities suspected to be the result of abuse and/or neglect upon referral by the local Indiana Department of Child Services office.
