That was an interesting summer, don't you think? Other than snow, I think we had all the seasons in one, spring to summer to fall to summer again. That’s why I love Northwest Indiana, always an adventure.
Last market day
Schererville’s last Farmers Market is Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Redar Park, Austin and Gregory streets. It’s been lots of fun, great food and crafts, and a chance to see neighbors you probably won’t see again until spring.
The Schererville Park and Recreation Department’s Country-A-Fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, also at Redar Park. It will feature lots of crafters, food, music and crafts and stories for kids.
Parks on Facebook
The parks department also has many different programs planned to get us through the holidays. Their Facebook page has all the events listed, so “like” them at “Schererville Parks & Recreation” or drop by their new Community Center, 500 E. Joliet St., and pick up the fall/holiday brochure.
Chamber on Facebook
I had resisted Facebook entirely until the Schererville Chamber of Commerce decided to update its page. I hate to admit it, but it’s really very informative. Chamber members are starting to “like” our page, which gives you one page to go to that has lots of local business and nonprofit organization information. From Strack’s specials to Mail City making keys (who knew), so please “like” us, too, at https://www.facebook.com/TheScherervilleChamber.
Hockey close to home
While the Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks are getting ready to start their regular season, the Blackbirds have already hit the ice.
If you like hockey, it’s being played at the Midwest Training and Ice Center, 10600 White Oak Ave., Dyer. The Illiana Blackbirds, part of the Minnesota Junior Hockey League, has begun its season. Their teams, from the Mighty Mites to the traveling teams, call Midwest home, and there is plenty of great action on the ice.
Sample wine and beer
The Schererville Chamber of Commerce Annual Beer Sampling/Wine Tasting Event will be held Oct. 17 at the Banquets at St. George, 528 W. 767th Ave., Schererville.
Reservations must be made in advance, and the cost is $35. Make those reservations at the chamber office, 149 E. Joliet St.
This event has grown over the past few years and it’s a great pre-holiday get-together for friends, clubs or businesses.
I would like to wish Immanuel Presbyterian Church a Happy 50th Birthday. Their journey with Schererville has been a great one, maybe a little rocky at times, but through it all they have kept faith and now are experiencing a growth spurt, especially in the children’s Sunday School programs.
