HAMMOND | A Schererville woman has forged an agreement with federal prosecutors, admitting she stole $659,000 from the region title company that formerly employed her.
In the plea agreement filed Thursday in Hammond federal court, Laurie Brezinski admitted to embezzling the money between 2001 to 2008 and filing a false tax return.
Brezinski was charged last year with taking faulty checks from Crown Point's Ticor Title Insurance Co. while serving as its accounting manager, U.S. District Court documents state.
The company now is known as Fidelity National Title Insurance Co.
Brezinski could face up to 13 years in prison but is asking for leniency in sentencing as part of her plea agreement. She also could be forced to pay $659,048 in restitution to the title company and $182,775 to the U.S. Treasury.
