CROWN POINT | The former financial secretary for Immanuel Presbyterian Church was charged Wednesday with pocketing more than $24,000 from church funds, according to court records.
Tracy L. Lessner, 29, of Schererville, faces two counts of fraud on a financial institution and theft. A warrant was issued Wednesday for Lessner's arrest.
Church officials told Schererville police that they discovered checks totaling $24,596.14 intended for the church were cashed into Lessner's personal bank account using a phone app, according to an affidavit. The checks were cashed between April and December 2013.
A governing group for the church met with Lessner who told church members she took the money for a family vacation to Wisconsin Dells, according to the affidavit. Lessner was fired from her position after the meeting.
