SCHERERVILLE | Two area soldiers who were killed last year while serving in Afghanistan will be honored during a Sunday service at the St. John Township War Memorial.
Pictures and biographies of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. David P. Nowaczyk and Indiana National Guard Spc. Sergio E. Perez have been added to the St. John Township War Memorial outside of the Schererville Police Department, 25 E. Joliet St.
A dedication ceremony begins at 3 p.m. at the memorial site, said Cindy Horgash, of the war memorial committee.
Families of the men will attend the program and receive flags which were once flown over the U.S. Capitol, Horgash said.
Nowaczyk, 32, of Dyer, died in April last year from injuries he suffered in an improvised explosive device attack in Kunar province.
Perez, 21, of Schererville, was killed during a July 2012 attack that included rocket-propelled grenades and small arms in Kandahar province.
Horgash said more than 1,000 people are expected to attend the Sunday ceremony.
Parking is available at the Schererville Police Department, the parking lot behind Town Hall, 10 E. Joliet St., and at the St. Michael Parish parking lot, 1 W. Wilhelm St.
Horgash said a portion of Joliet Street near the memorial will be closed during the ceremony.
Horgash said the project to honor the men on the war memorial started last year. She became involved with it while she was employed at the Schererville Parks and Recreation Department.
Horgash said she was compelled to continue her involvement with the project after she left the department.
"It's one of those things you can't walk away from," she said.
