SCHERERVILLE | Jak's Warehouse and Strack & Van Til have teamed up to launch a food drive for the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana's Hope Project.
The program, which runs until July 21, asks people to buy three food items at Strack & Van Til locations and deliver the items to Jak's Warehouse, 221 U.S. 41 in Schererville.
Each person who donates three food items will receive a $5 game card at Jak's, said Lisa Carpenter, director of events and sales at Jak's.
Carpenter said Jak's has a goal to collect at least 1,000 pounds of food through the program.
"That's a very tall order," she said.
The food bank will use the donations to provide food to children participating in its Hope Project, which sets out to eliminate the cycle of generational poverty, Hope Project Coordinator Chanda Dixon said.
The Hope Project targets at-risk students in East Chicago and provides them with educational and nutritional services during after-school programs, Dixon said. Math and science are focus areas.
Dixon said food bank officials hope they eventually can expand the Hope Project into other local municipalities.
In addition to coordinating the food drive, Jak's also will host the food bank's annual gala and fundraiser Sept. 25, Carpenter said.
