Well, that was a unique way to start a new year. A snow storm and wind chills that broke records. The only time I went outdoors was to snap pictures of my husband blowing snow off the driveway. It was tough.

If you are ready to venture out now, here are some suggestions.

Fashion Show planned

Since tickets go very quickly, I want to make sure to mention the Schererville Chamber of Commerce’s 22nd annual Mardi Gras Fashion Show. This year’s event will be held March 4 at the Halls of St. George, 905 E. Joliet St., Schererville.

Tickets can be purchased at the Chamber Office for $35. No tickets will be sold at the door. Chamber board member Cindy Jansky, of Caliber Home Loans, is chairing the event.

Head to the parks

The Schererville Park and Recreation Department has many events planned.

The Daddy-Daughter Dance will be held Feb. 7, the Valentine Story/Craft Night is Feb. 14 and a Moms/Sons Bowling Event will be held Feb. 16. There’s also a Digital Scrapbooking Class and an Oil Painting Class coming up.

Call (219) 865-5530 for fees and details.

Sandpaper, a new business in town and a Chamber of Commerce member, is working with the parks department on several classes. They can teacher how to refurnish/revamp existing furniture.

Farewell to pastor

Immanuel Presbyterian Church will say goodbye to Pastor Jody Noble on Feb. 2.

Pastor Jody and her husband, Mike, are heading south to Florida (good timing) and family. The congregation wishes them the best and thanks her for all her hard work.

In the short time she has been with the church, membership has grown, especially in the Children’s Sunday School. She will be truly missed.

Dinner and bingo nights

St. Michael Church will host its “That’s Amore” Dinner on Feb. 8.

Don’t forget, every Monday St. Michael's holds bingo games. Doors open at 5 p.m., early birds start at 6 and regular games begin at 7.

Humane society gala

The Humane Society Calumet Area’s Hair of the Dog Gala will be held Feb. 8 at the Radisson at Star Plaza Hotel, 800 E. U.S. 30, Merrillville.

Valentine's Day weddings

Looking to get married on Valentine's Day, surrounded by silver, gold and precious jewels?

Albert’s Diamond Jewelers will host its annual Valentine’s Day “Say I Do Event” on Feb. 14. Call (219) 322-2700 for details and to sign up.

Food drive underway

The annual Food Drive hosted by Culver's of Schererville, 980 W. U.S. 30, and the St. John Township Center runs through Feb. 28.

Wine tasting set

The final Dreams Come True Wine Tasting to benefit Perry Ferrini Dog Park will be held Feb. 20 at Banquets at St. George, 528 E. 77th Ave. Schererville. Call (219) 627-3490 for tickets.

Play and eat

Schererville American Legion Post 485’s Bean Bag Tournament and Chili Cook-Off is scheduled for Feb. 15, with registration from 5 to 6 p.m. Call the post, 7485 Burr St., at (219) 322-5485 for details.

Think spring!

White Sox Opening Day is March 31, does anyone else think it might be played in snow? Go Sox!
