SCHERERVILLE | Youth 6 to 11 looking for something to do outdoors this summer are invited to a free Garden Summer Camp at Tri Town Safety Village, 1350 Eagle Ridge Drive.
The Lake County Master Gardeners and Purdue Cooperative Extension Office are offering this summer camp. Children can register to attend three different times during the summer to learn about gardening and get their hands dirty while experiencing a butterfly garden and learning about vegetable gardening.
The program is offered from 9 am to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, and again July 9 or 11, and again Aug. 6 or 8. Youth are asked to attend one session per month.
Contact Nikky Witkowski at the Purdue Cooperative Extension Office, (219) 755-3240 or firstname.lastname@example.org, for registration information. Registration is limited to 20 per day.
During the first session in June, youths will learn the basics of planting/gardening and learn about composting with worms. In July, they will focus on safely harvesting from the vegetable garden and will explore the good and bad insects that can be in a garden. During the last session in August, participants will learn about pumpkins and squash and be able to see more activity in the butterfly garden. They will also learn about growing fall vegetables.
