SCHERERVILLE | Fleet Feet Sports is offering a 10-week Girls on the Run program for girls 8 to 13 beginning March 13. An informational meeting will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the store.
Girls on the Run of Northwest Indiana is a character development program for girls in grades 3 through 8 that is offered at more than 35 sites in Porter, Lake, LaPorte and Jasper counties. This is the first time that Fleet Feet Sports has offered the program and it is open to girls from any community.
Through exercise, positive reinforcement and encouraging role models, GOTR helps girls develop the confidence they need during the critical preteen years. Facilitated by trained coaches, the program combines training for a 3.1-mile running event with self-esteem enhancing workouts. The goal of the program is to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development.
“We are excited to bring Girls on the Run to Fleet Feet. It is just another part of our commitment to creating a healthy and physically active community in Northwest Indiana,” said Misty Chandos, director of training and event coordinator for Fleet Feet Schererville. “The girls love this program and it is socially and athletically rewarding.”
The program will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 7:30 a.m. Saturdays at Fleet Feet Sports, 635 E. U.S. 30. Classes last for 90 minutes and are limited to 30 girls. The cost is $125 per girl.
“Most of our area Girls on the Run programs area offered at elementary schools or parks. Fleet Feet is one of the first retailers to step up to offer the program and we’re very excited,” said Jill Schlueter-Kim, the council director for GOTR NWI. “Fleet Feet has supported our programs for some time, but this takes their support to a new level."
