SCHERERVILLE | The town looks to break ground for its 9/11 memorial next month.
The ceremony is set for 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Police Department, 25 E. Joliet St., Schererville Fire Chief Joseph Kruzan said.
He said town officials decided to have the event the night of Sept. 10 instead of Sept. 11 so more people will be available to attend the ceremony.
The town's 9/11 memorial, which will be on Police Department grounds, will include an I-beam from a World Trade Center tower.
The 1,931-pound, 14-foot-long beam is 16 inches wide and 12 inches high.
Schererville received the piece of slightly bent steel Sept. 9 last year.
The town's 9/11 memorial committee wrote a letter to the Port Authority of New York after hearing requests by other communities were granted for pieces of the towers. After an initial denial, a second request by Schererville was successful.
