SCHERERVILLE | Community Healthcare System is developing plans to open an imaging and urgent care outpatient facility in the 7600 block of Harvest Drive.

The existing building there would be remodeled for the facility, according to VOA Associates, an architectural firm representing Community.

The dimensions of the structure would not be changed during remodeling, Schererville Plan Commission President Bill Jarvis said during a commission study session Monday.

Town Manager Bob Volkmann said a new landscaped buffer zone would be created between the facility and the nearby residential area.

More parking spaces would be added by expanding the parking area into a lot north of the building.

The lot for the additional parking is zoned residential, but VOA will seek to rezone the lot to a highway commercial zoning district.

The architectural firm also will seek town approval to combine the lot in which the building is located and the lot for the additional parking into one lot.

The commission could make a decision about the requests during its public meeting next month.

During a commission meeting prior to the study session, the commission gave a favorable recommendation to a rezone request Buckeye Partners LP submitted to expand its petroleum storage facility at 36 E. Division St.

Town Council approval is needed before the property is rezoned from light industrial/business park to general industrial.

Buckeye plans to build three new above-ground storage tanks that would be about 65 feet tall and about 200 feet in diameter.

In July, the Board of Zoning Appeals granted a height variance for the proposed expansion.

The variance was needed because the maximum height permitted there is 50 feet.
