SCHERERVILLE | Recently, Homan Elementary School in Schererville, IN celebrated Autism Awareness month by having a “Light it Up Blue” Fundraiser. Students and staff were encouraged to wear blue and bring $1 to donate to the National Autism Association of Northwest Indiana (NAA NWI).
Homan’s Social Skills Group organized the event. The social skills group is comprised of a group of 4th grade trained peer mentors along with the school social worker, Michelle Stan, and speech pathologist, Jenna Blane, who teach social skills to our students with autism on a weekly basis. Our “Light it Blue” Fundraiser at Homan Elementary raised $388!
On May 14, the money was given to the NAA NWI president, Ms. Maria Janik.
Ms. Janik said that it was wonderful that Homan chose this organization to donate the money. All monies will stay in Northwest Indiana to assist Lake and Porter County families that are affected by autism. The NAA of NWI provides hope and information, support groups for parents, social activities and workshops/ seminars on a variety of topics (i.e.: autism, ADD/ADHD, special diets, biomedical treatments and related disorders).
Ms. Janik is the mother of two, grade school aged boys with autism. The NAA NWI has been serving families since 2006. If you would like more information or would like to donate money to this vital organization, please contact their website at: www.northwestindianaautism.com.
