The U.S. National POW/MIA Recognition Day will be observed at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at Schererville’s American Legion Post 485, 7485 Burr St.

For just a few moments, we will have the opportunity to come together to remember those who were and are prisoners of war, and those who are still missing in action, and show their families that we care.

The Legion invites everyone to join them. Weather permitting, the ceremony will be held outdoors on the Post grounds. It has always been a touching ceremony, especially when the POW/MIA balloons are set free.

Like many veterans organizations, lodges and clubs, our Legion needs your support. If you are a veteran, drop by the Post Home and ask about membership.

Local singer/impressionist Harley will appear at the Post on Sept. 20 (call (219) 322-5485 for ticket information) and if you like a good steak, the annual Steak Fry will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 21.

Diners can enjoy a great Mexican Dinner (eat-in or take-out) from 4 to 7 p.m. the second and fourth Mondays each month at the Post Home.

Church is golden

Celebrating its 50th year, Schererville’s Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 140 W. U.S. 30, has made great plans for its Children’s Sunday School, which starts Sept. 15 during the 10 a.m. service. No reservations needed. Come for the service, stay for the cookies.

Get up and get going

Franciscan Omni Health & Fitness Schererville invites everyone to “get off the couch and join them” at the 5K event which begins at 8 a.m. Sept. 21 in Schererville’s Plum Creek Subdivision.

For more information on the run, or sponsorship opportunities, call Betty or Amy at (219) 865-6969, ext. 3020.

Bump Out Cancer

Lake Central High School’s “Bump Out Cancer” event is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 1 at the high school, 8400 U.S. 41, St. John.

The Indian volleyball team and its coaches know that cancer comes in many forms and can strike anyone at any time. Before, during and after the Oct. 1 march, there will be different cancer awareness groups on-site distributing information and event T-shirts will be available for purchase.

Let’s support these great kids, their families, coaches and a great cause. For information, email Joe or Lindsay Kruzan at kruzanfam@aim.com.

Go Bears!

Well, it’s the end of August, and since the White Sox have stumbled (thank goodness for the Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks), I’m looking forward to the Chicago Bears season and fall weather. Oh wait, we’ve had  fall weather, just not pumpkins, which should start showing up soon at Schererville’s Farmer’s Market. The market is open from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursdays at Redar Park. See you there.
