SCHERERVILLE | Three men face multiple charges in the killing of a 24-year-old woman who was shot Saturday night after returning to her Schererville apartment.
Michael Craig Jr., William Blasingame III and Stephen Lee Henderson each were charged Wednesday in Lake Criminal Court with murder and murder in the perpetration of a robbery.
Craig, 22, of Merrillville, and Blasingame, 30, of East Hazelcrest, Ill., are in custody at Lake County Jail, Schererville police said. Henderson, 25, of Gary, remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous, police said.
Anyone with information about Henderson's whereabouts is asked to contact the Schererville Police Department at (219) 322-5000.
Court records show a witness heard heavy footsteps and a struggle about 11:30 p.m. Saturday in the hallway of his apartment in the 8000 block of Alpine Lane.
He told police he looked through his door's peephole and saw Henderson put Jacqueline Gardner in a choke hold.
The person saw Gardner on the floor of the hallway after he called 911 and screamed for help, court records show.
Gardner was transported to Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus in Merrillville, where she was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound to the right side of her back.
Court records show police recovered a 12 gauge shotgun shell in the apartment building, and investigators determined Gardner's tip money, which she received before she returned home from work, was missing.
Craig told police he, Blasingame and Henderson waited for Gardner to come home Saturday night, court records state.
He indicated Blasingame and Henderson entered the apartment after Gardner, and Henderson had a shotgun with him, according to the records.
Another witness told police he saw three men enter a black Oldsmobile Aurora that fled the area after the shooting. The person provided police with a license plate number from the vehicle.
Court records show police found the vehicle behind Blasingame's home. The records indicate blood was found on a seat in the vehicle and on a shirt.
A cellphone also was recovered in the vehicle.
Court records show the phone's GPS function was used outside of Gardner's apartment. Craig's address allegedly was in the phone and multiple calls were made to Henderson.
