SCHERERVILLE | The Tri-Town Safety Village can expand the educational services it provides to children after it received a $39,000 donation from NIPSCO.

Those funds, which the safety village received during its Wednesday board meeting, will be used to create a building on the organization's property at 1350 Eagle Ridge Drive, said Rick Calinski, public affairs manager at NIPSCO.

Gas and electric safety will be explained, Calinski said. Education about calling Indiana 811 before digging on properties also will provided there, said Bill Jarvis, the village's executive director.

Among materials provided to children is information explaining what to do if a gas leak is detected in a building.

It explains to leave the building, call 911 and NIPSCO and to warn others to stay away from the area while officials examine the issue.

The handout also has a scratch-n-sniff area so children will know the odor of natural gas.

Jarvis said he wants children to bring the materials they receive to their parents so their parents also are aware of the safety precautions.

The NIPSCO building could open this summer, Calinski said. The Northwestern Indiana Building and Construction Trades Council will be involved with the project, he said.

The new building will join several existing structures at the safety village, which also teaches children about fire, railroad and traffic safety.

Among the existing structures is a house that simulates what children would experience during a structure fire.

The organization also has classrooms and a garden where children learn about growing vegetables and eating healthy food, Jarvis said.

Produce grown there has been donated to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, he said.

Calinski said he was "blown away" by the safety village during his first visit there, and NIPSCO is proud to be a partner with the organization.
