SCHERERVILLE | A new gourmet coffee franchise could be brewing in Northwest Indiana.

The first Coffee Cabin location is proposed to open along U.S. 30 near Reed Lane, said Jeff Conti, an owner of the business. During a Plan Commission study session Monday, Conti said a goal is to have 10 Coffee Cabin locations open within the next three years.

Conti said he wants to create a “woodsy oasis” on the property for the Schererville location, and a log cabin would be constructed to house the business.

He said Coffee Cabin would be a drive-thru business, and a VIP program would be offered to customers. Those in the VIP program wouldn’t have to use the drive-thru. Instead, a curbside pickup service would be offered to them, Conti said.

Several commission members were receptive of Coffee Cabin opening in Schererville, but they have concerns about ingress and egress for the business and the route vehicles would travel on the property.

“I like the concept,” Commission President Tom Anderson said. “I like the building.”

Conti said he hopes to address the concerns with new engineering plans that will be submitted to the town.

Conti will be seeking primary approval of plans for the business, and he would like the matter to be on the agenda for the commission’s July public meeting.

Conti hopes to open the Schererville Coffee Cabin in September or October, he said.

In another matter, Town Manager Bob Volkmann said Schererville is pursuing a new park on 17 acres of property north of U.S. 30 and east of Burr Street.

The town hasn’t yet acquired the property, but it is seeking appraisals, Volkmann said. The land is along an existing bike trail, and the park would be an amenity for the trail.

Volkmann said a shelter could be established so those using the trail could have a place to rest. An exercise circuit also could be created there, he said.

The property currently has a residential zoning, which would need to be changed before a park could be established there, Volkmann said.

The Plan Commission would be the first panel to consider a zone change request for the land.
