Two candidates with local political experience are vying to represent Indiana House District 15.

Democrat Thomas O'Donnell is facing Republican Harold "Hal" Slager for the seat.

O'Donnell, who served on the Lake County Council for 12 years, said his legal background will be an asset if he is elected.

He said he would bring knowledge to help state lawmakers understand how laws would impact "people in everyday life."

O'Donnell said he is concerned about the funding reductions to public education during the last several years, and he would pursue sufficient funding for education.

O'Donnell also opposes right-to-work legislation.

He said he thinks it will have "an adverse impact on working men and women."

Improving education also is a goal for Slager.

Slager, who is serving his 10th year on the Schererville Town Council, said he wants a review of the funding formula for public schools.

Slager said Lake County municipalities are hurting financially because of the levy freeze.

When new developments are established, communities must support them with public safety resources, but there isn't sufficient funding to expand departments, Slager said.

Slager would pursue funding alternatives to help towns and cities provide sufficient services.
