SCHERERVILLE | A miscommunication between family members led to Schererville police and the Northwest Regional SWAT team investigating a hostage situation that didn't happen, police said.

Officers responded to a home in the 1500 block of Demeter Drive about 2:45 p.m. Monday after receiving a report of a man holding his brother at gunpoint, said Schererville police Cmdr. Brian Neyhart.

The person who reported the incident, a relative of the brothers, didn't witness the situation, but received information about it from his mother, Neyhart said.

After traveling to the residence, police thought they heard movement in the house. The Northwest Regional SWAT team was called to the area, Neyhart said.

Officers determined there was no hostage situation there.

The brother officers thought was taken hostage later contacted police to indicate he wasn't held at gunpoint by the man, Neyhart said.

It appears the brother was threatened by the man earlier Monday, and the man had a gun with him when making the threats, Neyhart said.

He thinks information about what transpired with the brothers was inaccurately communicated among family members, which led to the incorrect report received by police.

Neyhart said the person who reported the situation to the Police Department met with officers near the scene.

That person was taken into custody on a Schererville Town Court warrant issued in an unrelated incident, he said.
