SCHERERVILLE | A Schererville man is accused of selling counterfeit coins in 2009.

A man told police he bought 561 coins between February 2009 and June 2009 from John Paul Garcia, of Schererville.

The man paid a total of $370,000 for the coins, which he thought were U.S. silver dollars, half dollars, dimes and other collectible coins, court documents state.

The man was told the coins were counterfeit and had no value after he sent several of them to a coin grading service.

After contacting the U.S. Secret Service about the matter, the U.S. Treasury Department also examined the coins and determined they were counterfeit.

Garcia, 45, has been charged with felony forgery, theft and counterfeiting.
