SCHERERVILLE | A dead pit bull found behind a Schererville business may have been involved in dogfighting, police said.

The dog had fresh bite marks, old scars and blood around its mouth when it was found frozen next to a dumpster Jan. 22 in the 1600 block of U.S. 41, police said.

Police believe the brown pit bull died of injuries suffered from dogfighting prior to being dumped there.

Police said it appears the dog, which was about 100 pounds, was wearing a heavy collar for a lengthy period of time because the pit bull had a wide indentation around its neck. There was no collar on the dog when it was located.

The Police Department is investigating the incident with the town's Animal Control.

Anyone with information about the dog is asked to contact the Schererville Police Department at (219) 322-5000 or Jan Kalinowski at the Animal Control shelter at (219) 865-6992.
