SCHERERVILLE | Town leaders are supporting the Midwest Elite Preparatory Academy's plans to open a location in Schererville.
The Town Council on Wednesday unanimously approved a variance of use needed for the private school for children in preschool through 12th grade to open at 5261 Fountain Drive.
Midwest Elite will occupy half of one of the seven buildings within Park Center, which is in a highway commercial planned unit development.
"It looks like a great addition to that center," Town Manager Bob Volkmann said.
Before the variance of use request reached the council, it received a favorable recommendation from Schererville's Board of Zoning Appeals, Volkmann said.
Midwest Elite has an existing facility at 8101 Polo Club Drive in Merrillville, and that location will remain open, said Ronda Payne, the school's chief executive officer and principal.
Midwest Elite opened in 2005, Payne said. It met at a Merrillville church until it moved to the Polo Club Drive location in 2011.
Since then, their school has experienced steady growth, Payne said.
Midwest Elite expanded into an additional unit at the Polo Club Drive building in 2012. Enrollment at the Merrillville building is above 100 students, Payne said.
There are many potential students on a waiting list, which prompted the need for a second Midwest Elite location, Payne said.
Midwest Elite, which is in session year round, obtained Freeway school accreditation through the state in 2013, Payne said. It also added a post-graduate educational program and basketball team for aspiring college players.
Payne said the school also started boys and girls high school basketball teams.
