SCHERERVILLE | A troublesome water main in the Pine Island subdivision is slated to be replaced.
The Schererville Waterworks Board awarded a contract to B&D Sewer and Backhoe Service, which submitted a bid of about $263,000 for the work to replace approximately 1,400 feet of pipe, Town Manager Bob Volkmann said.
The board's unanimous approval came with the stipulation that the project begin by Sept. 3.
Schererville Public Works Director Jeff Huet said there have been 17 documented breaks to the water main during the last 10 years. There have been several other breaks that weren't documented, he said.
"That's just too much," he said.
Repairing the main costs $5,000 to $6,000 each time there is a break, he said.
Soil has weakened the existing main, which has contributed to the issues.
"Hopefully we will get a very long service life out of this (new) pipe," Huet said.
The project should take about two months to complete.
The water main crosses Hanley Lane. There likely will be a closure on that road when workers reach that area, Huet said.
The closure isn't expected to have a major impact because it might last several hours during one day of the project.
Notification of the water main replacement will be sent to residents within the construction area.
