SCHERERVILLE | A resident's request to provide gunsmithing services at his home was opposed Monday night by his neighbors and the Board of Zoning Appeals.

The board gave an unfavorable recommendation for a variance James Czech is seeking to provide the services.

Bill Jarvis, the board's president, said the Town Council ultimately will make the final decision about the request.

Board member Martin Plisky said the request doesn't clearly show a hardship which would warrant a favorable recommendation.

Czech said he can't afford to rent space in a commercial area, which is why he would like to provide the services from his home in a neighborhood near Burr Street and 73rd Avenue.

He said much of the work he would provide would involve cleaning firearms. He also could make repairs when needed. No firearms or ammunition would be sold from his home, and guns would not be tested at the residence, Czech said.

He told the BZA he retired from the Illinois State Police reserves after 15 years of service there. He said he had provided gunsmithing for that department.

During a public hearing for the variance request, two residents said they are concerned about the traffic the business could bring to the residential area.

Czech said the services wouldn't be open to the public. He would only repair or clean firearms from local law enforcement agencies or when he would receive requests from gun shops.

He said there would be no traffic to his home because he would pick up the firearms from the departments or shops and transport them to his residence.

Town Manager Bob Volkmann said Czech has submitted an application to obtain a federal license needed to provide the services.

Approval from the town is needed before Czech could receive the license, Volkmann said.
