SCHERERVILLE | The Perry Ferrini Dog Park could be open in about a month, town officials said.
A fence for the park has been installed at the property on 91st Avenue near Burr Street, and Schererville Town Manager Bob Volkmann said the park could open Aug. 1.
Some work still must occur before that happens, including an entrance control system that will be installed in coming weeks, Volkmann said.
The Town Council also must adopt membership fees that dog owners would pay to use the facility. Councilmen could make a decision about the fees in July, Volkmann said.
If adopted, the fees would have to be advertised before the clerk-treasurer's office could accept registrations.
Volkmann said he is collaborating with parks Superintendent John Novacich on establishing a parking lot for the facility.
Council President Tom Schmitt said planning for the park began after the town received several requests from residents expressing a desire for the facility.
He said it's fortunate Schererville had property available to establish the park.
Town officials named the park in recognition of Perry Ferrini, a former councilman who supported building a dog park in town. Ferrini died in late 2009, halfway through his first term in office.
