SCHERERVILLE | Schererville firefighters say they are continuing efforts to establish a working contract with the town.
The Professional Firefighters Local 4279 has met with the Schererville Town Council during two executive sessions to discuss the potential agreement, said Eric Newell, the union's president.
He believes the outcome of those closed meetings has been positive.
Details of the proposed agreement haven't been released, but Newell has said it involves working conditions, manpower and staffing.
He said a high level of service has been established at the Schererville Fire Department, and the agreement would protect that level of service.
The union was established about nine years ago. Newell said this is the first time the union has sought an agreement with the town.
Firefighters and Schererville leaders will take their time discussing the matter to ensure the process moves smoothly and is done correctly, he said.
The proposed agreement doesn't ask for monetary raises, and it wouldn't seek anything the department doesn't already have in place, Newell said.
Town Council President Rob Guetzloff said the council asked the union to provide the panel with information about firefighter union agreements in place in surrounding communities.
"We will continue to work with the firefighters like we would with (other departments)," Guetzloff said.
