SCHERERVILLE | The town plans to use community development block grant funds for enhancements at Stephen Park.

Schererville's allocation for the community development block grant program is $122,390 for 2013 and 2014, Clerk-Treasurer Janice Malinowski said at Wednesday's Town Council meeting.

Schererville Parks Superintendent John Novacich said existing equipment at Stephen Park is about 20 years old.

"It definitely lived its life," he said of the equipment.

Renovating the park at 7600 Lincolnwood Ave. is a project identified in the Parks and Recreation Department's recently updated master plan.

Installing a rubberized playground surface is among the work scheduled for the park, Novacich said.

The wood chips currently used at the facility create an uneven surface. The proposed rubberized surface will make the facility ADA compliant, Novacich said.

New playground structures also will be installed there, he said.

One of the structures will be suitable for children 2 to 5 years old. Another structure is slated for children 5 to 12 years old, Novacich said.

The Parks and Recreation Department completed a similar project at Redar Park. Those improvements cost about $275,000, Novacich said.

He anticipates the enhancements at Stephen Park will cost about the same amount.

In other business, the Town Council decided to provide financial assistance to the Schererville Baseball League.

The council unanimously approved a $2,500 donation to the league, which is in need of new equipment, Councilman Tom Schmitt said.

Councilman Mike Troxell said the league has produced tourism in the town.
