HAMMOND | A Schererville woman who embezzled $659,000 from a Crown Point title insurance company was sentenced to 37 months in a federal prison this week.
U.S. District Judge Joseph Van Bokkelen also ordered 43-year-old Laurie Brezinski to pay the same amount in restitution to Ticor Title Insurance Co. in Crown Point, now known as Fidelity National Title Insurance Co.
Brezinski pleaded guilty to one count of insurance crimes affecting interstate commerce and one count of tax fraud. According to the Internal Revenue Service, Brezinksi should have paid $179,800 in income tax on the $659,000.
The charges stem from Brezinski's taking faulty checks from Ticor while serving as its accounting manager between 2003 and 2008 and siphoning the money from her employer. Brezinski, who worked at the company for about 16 years, was terminated from employment in 2008 after the allegations surfaced.
Brezinski had faced up to 82 years in prison if convicted on all 11 counts in the indictment.
