SCHERERVILLE | The Schererville Police Department is accepting applications for the next Schererville Citizens Police Academy session.

The academy is open to Schererville residents and business owners age 18 and older.

The nine-week session meets from 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays starting Sept. 9.

Class size is limited to 15 people. Applications are available at the Police Department, 25 E. Joliet St., and are due back by 5 p.m. Aug. 30.

The academy will offer residents a chance to see how the department works. Topics include patrol functions, firearms and criminal investigations.

After graduating, participants become eligible to apply for the department's Volunteers in Police Services program.
