SCHERERVILLE | Schererville firefighters want to establish a working agreement with the town.
Eric Newell, president of the Professional Firefighters Local 4279, said the firefighter union was established about nine years ago, but there is no existing agreement in place with the town.
The union is seeking an agreement regarding working conditions, manpower and staffing, Newell said.
"We're not looking for anything more than what we have now," he said.
The union believes the agreement is needed to continue providing the level of service already in place.
Firefighters recently contacted town officials to discuss the proposed agreement. Newell said the union is scheduling a time to meet with Town Manager Bob Volkmann about the matter.
The union is looking forward to the opportunity to explain the proposal. Newell noted there is no guarantee of what will come out of the meeting.
The Merrillville Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 168 went through a similar situation to establish an agreement which the Merrillville Town Council approved in January 2012.
No monetary raises were sought in Merrillville's agreement, but the document locked in employment conditions for officers.
