SCHERERVILLE | The town's boundaries look to stretch slightly further in coming months.
Duane Fritz and Lance Dabrowski submitted a petition for voluntary annexation of a small property on 91st Avenue near Burr Street, Schererville Town Manager Bob Volkmann said.
Jack Slager also has asked for voluntary annexation of another small piece of property in the 8100 block of Austin Avenue, Volkmann said. Jack Slager is not related to Councilman Hal Slager.
The council on Wednesday unanimously approved resolutions for the fiscal plans for the proposed annexations. The council received no public comment about the plans during public hearings conducted Wednesday.
Councilmen also must adopt ordinances associated with the petitions before the annexations become effective.
The council is expected to consider adopting those ordinances during its December meeting.
Town Attorney David Austgen said the council couldn't adopt them Wednesday because there is a 14-day waiting period before councilmen could vote on the ordinances.
If adopted next month, the voluntary annexations would become effective next year because there is a 30- or 60-day waiting period after the ordinances are approved, Volkmann said.
In other business, the town received a $500 donation from the American Legion Post 485 for Schererville's 9/11 memorial.
The funds were generated through a motorcycle ride conducted by the post.
American Legion Post 485 has had the rides for several years, and the organization plans to continue having them in the future to help generate funds for the memorial.
The post could incorporate a local businesses into the event to generate additional funding.
