SCHERERVILLE | Schererville police are investigating a string of break-ins in the Pine Hill Estates subdivision.
About 4:45 a.m. Friday, a resident in the 3100 block of Wimbledon Drive heard her car alarm activate and her dogs started barking, police said.
The vehicle's window was shattered, but no items were reported stolen, police said.
Officers also found footprints on the ground. A K-9 unit was sent to track the area, police said.
It led them to Westbury Court, where the track was lost, police said. A vehicle could have left the area there, police suggested.
While searching the neighborhood, officers saw an open garage door at another home on Wimbledon Drive, police said. A resident there later told police her purse was missing from the kitchen.
According to police, officers also discovered a vehicle break-in in the 2100 block of Springhill Drive. About $1,600 worth of stereo equipment was taken from that vehicle, police said.
Schererville detectives were dispatched to the area to process the vehicles and the home for possible evidence.
Police are unsure how many people were involved in the break-ins.
Anyone with information about the situation or residents who witnessed suspicious activity in that area are asked to contact Schererville police Cmdr. Michael Vode or Detective Supervisor Jeff Cook at (219) 322-5000.
