I really don’t like mentioning Christmas before Halloween or Thanksgiving, but. . .

For years, the Schererville Parks and Recreation  Department and Schererville Chamber of Commerce have co-hosted a Santa Comes to Town/Christmas Tree Lighting the day after Thanksgiving.

Teibel’s Restaurant has always supplied the best hot chocolate and Strack and Van Til has always donated delicious cookies. Over the years, very little changed until last year, when in hopes of starting a “new” town tradition, a Christkindlmarket was added.

It was a great success, and families loved it. There was music, vendors and chestnuts roasting. But, it was all held outdoors and, of course, that was the day it decided to turn cold and windy. So many shoppers rushed through and really didn’t have a chance to enjoy the event.

This year, Christkindlmarket is returning, but moving indoors and taking Santa Claus with it.

The Santa-Comes-To-Town-Light-A-Tree-Christkindlmarket (we will shorten it soon, I promise) will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Nov. 29 at the park department’s new Community Center, 500 E. Joliet St.

Santa will make his arrival around 4 p.m. and stay until 8, so there’s no reason to rush over just to get in line. But do rush over to shop. There will be games and activities for children, and make sure they bring their list.

The couple that roasts chestnuts over an open fire will return, but don’t worry Fire Chief Joseph Kruzan, they will be outdoors.

Vendors will be selling Christmas-related items, from nut rolls to tree ornaments. Vendor space is available. If interested, call the chamber for an application at (219) 322-5412. There will be music, food and hopefully the start of a new family tradition.

The Times’ Schererville Community Page will have the flyer listed on it, and probably lots of pictures after the event.

Toy drive starts

Schererville’s American Legion Post 485, 7485 Burr St., is collecting unwrapped toys for its Toys 4 Tots Drive. Call (219) 322-5475.

Party with dolls

Lake Ridge Women’s Club is hosting an American Girl Doll Halloween Party from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the St. John Township Center, 1515 U.S. 30, Schererville. Girls and their mothers will enjoy light refreshments, crafts, dancing, raffles and surprises.

Costumes are optional. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For tickets, call Karen Aldridge at (219) 756-5213. Cost is $10 per person; dolls attend free.

Proceeds sponsor scholarships.
