It was a tight race Tuesday for the Indiana House District 15 seat.
In the end, Republican Harold "Hal" Slager took the race from Democrat Thomas O'Donnell.
As the candidates watched numbers Tuesday night, neither was ready to declare victory.
"We've just got to wait and see how it plays out," Slager said.
O'Donnell said he was expecting a tight race with Slager, but "I can't believe how close it is."
"You never know what's going to happen," O'Donnell said.
O'Donnell and Slager each have local political experience.
O'Donnell served on the Lake County Council for 12 years and Slager is serving his 10th year on the Schererville Town Council.
Slager has said the levy freeze has made it difficult for municipalities to expand public safety resources when new developments are established.
If he takes the Indiana House District 15 seat, he has said he would pursue funding alternatives to help towns and cities that have encountered financial difficulties because of the freeze.
O'Donnell has said he opposes right-to-work legislation, and his legal background will be an asset if he is elected.
Both candidates have said they are concerned about funding for public schools and they would work to improve the situation.
