SCHERERVILLE | A longtime region athletic equipment and apparel store is opening a new location in Schererville.
Mike's Sporting Goods/St. John Sports is consolidating its Merrillville and St. John stores into one facility at a Schererville shopping center at the northwest corner of the U.S. 30 and U.S. 41 intersection, said owner John Collet said.
He is in the process of remodeling the store, which will be open by the end of the month, Collet said.
He said the store will use the Mike's Sporting Goods name because Collet will no longer have a location in St. John.
Baseball and softball will be the primary emphasis at the new location, and Mike's Sporting Goods will have plenty of equipment on display for customers, he said.
Collet also will offer screen printing, embroidery and other custom orders for sports teams and businesses.
Moving to Schererville provides the business with a central location in the area, Collet said.
"We're looking forward for this move," he said.
Besides moving to a facility at a well-traveled intersection, the consolidation of the stores looks to reduce operational costs, Collet said.
Mike's Sporting Goods has been in the region since 1972, Collet said. He bought the business about 11 years ago.
Collet said he will use the St. John facility as an outlet store until Christmas.
The Mike's Sporting Goods Crown Point location will remain open, Collet said.
